What is it?

This project incorporates project-based STEAM learning into the curriculum at Center for Advanced Learning (CAL)’s Digital Media & Design classrooms by making EMSP a client and providing internships at local nonprofit, MetroEast Community Media and small business, Lewis Creative, for selected students over the course of two summers.

Why It’s Important:

This is project-based learning in action. CAL students need ways to build their portfolio out of class.

How It Works:

CAL teacher, Cane Prevost, incorporated EMSP-relevant communications projects into his spring 2018 and SY 18-19 classes. Lewis Creative and MetroEast Community Media supervised six part-time interns in summer 2018 and four full-time interns in 2019 to create the communications deliverables selected. EMSP operated as a client of the two organizations, whose interns developed products and strategy for EMSP communications. Meanwhile, EMSP hired a Communications Assistant to continuously update social media, work on the website, and support newsletter revisions and redesign.

Results:

• Collaboration among a school, a nonprofit, and a small business around STEAM.
• Paid internships for STEAM students
• Communications products and strategy for EMSP
